Busuanga Island

Busuanga is the largest northern island in the district of Palawan (Philippines). It belongs to the archipelago of the Calamian.

Geography

The island has an area of ​​890 km ². It is 64 km long from Abanaban Point in the northwest to the Bocão Point in the southeast, with a maximum width of 26 km. To the northwest lies the Calauit Peninsula. The highest elevation is the Tundalara 640 meters to the east.

The island is divided between the municipalities of Busuanga (western third) and Coron (eastern part ). These communities are also smaller minor islands of Busuanga Island.

In the northeast Busuanga borders the Mindoro Strait to the Nanga Islands and the Apo Reef, located behind the main Philippine island of Mindoro. To the south are the islands of Culion, Coron and Bulalacao

Somewhat confusingly, the identical current name of several towns and islands. There is the island of Busuanga, with locations Old Busuanga, New Busuanga and Coron. Within sight south of the town of Coron Coron Bay and the island of Coron is located.

The name comes from an ancient Chinese trading Busuanga Language ( 9th century): Paki -tion, which were Calamien Kia -ma- yan ( 13th/14th century. Kaimayen ) called.

Population

The population in 2007 was 56,500 ( 45,000 in 2000). Coron is the capital and second largest city with about 30,000 inhabitants of the province of Palawan. On the island live Tagbanuwa that use a unique font.

Animals

On the island is the Calamian deer and a special rat, Rattus tiomanicus before.

Wreck Diving

Located between Busuanga and Coron Bay is famous among divers by 10 Japanese shipwrecks. This dive site is one of the best in the world. Approx. 25 km north- west of the island in 1996, the Lena Shoal junk found and lifted their charge.

Game reserve

On the Calauit Peninsula extends to 34,000 ha game reserve " Calauit Game Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary ". It is a private nature reserve and an open zoo with 70 giraffes and many other African animals such as zebras and impalas. You can go to " Safari " as in Africa. Here you can find the largest population of Calamian deer.

Transport links

There are daily flights with Airphil Express, Zest Airways and Cebu Pacific to Manila, El Nido and Puerto Princesa. Weekly services exist to El Nido, larger ferries (Super Ferry and Negros Ferry ) stop here on their way to and from Manila and Puerto Princessa. There is also the possibility of self- chartered Bangkas ( outrigger boats ) to El Nido to drive. However, this is only recommended for absolute good weather conditions.
