Butanol

The butanols are a group of four isomeric saturated alcohols having four carbon atoms. They have the general molecular formula C4H10O and a molar mass of 74.12 g / mol. Thus, all four structural isomers of the butyl group are represented, some of which differ markedly in their properties. The tert- butanol is the only solid. The 2- butanol is chiral and forms two stereoisomeric forms.

The partial oxidation of the primary butanols ( isobutanol and n-butanol ) via the butanals of the butane acids. The secondary butanol (sec -butanol) is oxidized to butanone.

The process for the biotechnological production of butanols ( biobutanol ) is still in an early development phase, particularly 1-butanol and isobutanol.
