George Edward " Butch" Byrd Jr. ( born September 20, 1941 in Watervliet, New York ) is an American former American football player. He played as a cornerback, among others, in the American Football League ( AFL) and the National Football League ( NFL) with the Buffalo Bills.

Playing career

College career

Butch Byrd attended high school in Troy. At his school, the LaSalle Institute, he already played American football and was repeatedly elected to the city selection. After finishing school, he studied at Boston University. For the Boston University Terriers football, he played three years as a running back, but also as a punt and kick -off - Returner.

Professional career

George Byrd was drafted in by the Buffalo Bills in the fourth round to 25th place. Byrd was already used by Head Coach Lou Saban as a rookie in the Defense of Bill as a cornerback. This year, Byrd was able to celebrate with the Bills also his first major success. The team, in whose ranks the top player Jack Kemp, Billy Shaw, Tom Sestak and Daryle Lamonica were, had won in the regular season twelve of 14 games and drew with it into the AFL- Finals, where they on the crew of the San Diego Chargers met. Byrd failed in his third entry into the AFL- Finals in 1966 with his team at the Kansas City Chiefs with 31:7. He could not decisive part in the game the Bills this time. George Byrd moved in 1971 to the Denver Broncos and finished his career after a game year. Byrd now lives in Weston, Massachusetts.

Honors

Butch Byrd played five times in the Pro Bowl, the final game of the best players of the season. He was five times voted All- Pro. Byrd is a member of the American Football League All- Time Team in the Boston University Athletics Hall of Fame, in the Capital Region Football Hall of Fame and the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and in the Hall of Fame of his high school. The Buffalo Bills honor him in the Buffalo Bills 50th Anniversary Team as one of their best players of all time ..
