Butha-Buthe District

The district Butha -Buthe is one of the ten districts (districts ) of the Kingdom of Lesotho in southern Africa.

Geography

The district Butha -Buthe is the northernmost and with 1767 km ², the smallest of the ten districts of Lesotho. In 2006 he had 109 529 inhabitants. It extends from the main town of the same name Butha -Buthe in the west to 3240 m high Khaleng la Lithunya ( German: Pass the guns) to the east. In the south, the district extends in the valley of Malibamatšo to near the Katse Dam, and in the north to 2028 meters high Mafika - Lisiu Pass, the border crossing to the South African QwaQwa, a former Homeland. Thus, the district lies partly in the densely populated lowlands, partly in the Maloti Mountains.

The main pass is the Moteng Pass, which must be crossed on the way from east Butha -Buthe in the Maloti Mountains.

Neighbouring districts are Leribe the south and west and Mokhotlong in the East and the South African province of Free State in the north.
