Buttermere (Cumbria)

Buttermere is a place and a civil parish in the Lake District, Cumbria, England. The civil parish has 127 inhabitants ( 2001). The place is situated on a land bridge between the two lakes Buttermere and Crummock Water, which were once a lake and their current short flow connection is called Buttermere Dubs.

In the south- west of the village lies the Red Pike and the North -East of the Wandope and Crag Hill and Robinson. From Buttermere is a road between the Wandope and Crag Hill on the north side and the Robinson on the southern side on the Newlands Pass to Keswick.

The Mill Beck flows through Buttermere and flows north- west of the town in Crummock Water.

To the author Alfred Wainwright, a plaque at St James' Church of Buttermere. Wainwright's final resting place at Innominate Tarn on Haystacks which is visible from here.

Well-known residents

Mary Robinson, daughter of the landlord of the Fish Inn in Buttermere, which became known as the Maid of Buttermere and their history was, among other factors by the Lake poet William Wordsworth in his poem The Prelude.
