Geology

Buzzards Bay was built during the latter part of the Pleistocene by the interplay of glacial and oceanic processes. Starting ago 50000-70000 years, the edges of the continental ice sheet that covered almost the whole of North America began to melt; since left behind moraines mark the former extent of the dwindling ice. Such moraine formed Cape Cod, which forms most of the eastern coast of Buzzards Bay.

In addition to the moraines produced the melting ice sheet Sander composed of mixed sediments and ice that the bay in the north- west and west demarcated. Melting ice blocks in the Sander deposits formed distinctive, circular features called kettle holes. Numerous examples of kettle holes may be found in the north-western Cape Cod Canal. Ultimately, the water from the melting ice increasing sea levels from sixty to one hundred and twenty feet and filled the preexisting Sander channels. At the end of the last ice age fifteen thousand years ago until six thousand years Buzzards Bay was dry land. During the last six thousand years
