By Jeeves

By Jeeves is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Alan Ayckbourn. It is loosely based on the Jeeves stories by PG Wodehouse. The premiere took place under the title " Jeeves " on April 22, 1975 at Her Majesty's Theatre in London. The Director also led Alan Ayckbourn.

Background

The first performance took place about 2 months after the death of PG Wodehouse. Whether and to what extent he was involved in the project itself and inaugurated, is not clear. It is striking, however: This production was one of the biggest flops of Andrew Lloyd Webber and had already after 38 performances on May 24, 1975 be set again. The piece would have to be actually referred to by style and construction to a modern, English Singspiel. In the longer text passages follow serene operetta -like melodies.

Others

The play was produced under the title " By Jeeves " at the Stephen Joseph Theatre again on 1 May 1996. The success was so great that it moved into the larger Duke of York 's Theatre in London soon. From there, the show moved on to the The Lyric Theatre, London. Also on Broadway was in 2001 to see the show.
