Byard Lancaster

William Byard Lancaster ( born August 6, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † 23 August 2012) was an American saxophonist and flautist of the avant-garde jazz.

Life

Lancaster, whose father and grandfather were amateur musicians, in addition to studying saxophone and flute and piano, singing, composition and conducting. He went to school with Kenny Barron and played with JR Mitchell and Jerome Hunter before he first studied at the Shaw University, then at the Berklee College of Music and the Conservatory of Boston from 1960 to 1963. From 1961 to 1964 he played with Dave Burrell, and in 1965 came to New York City, where he first worked with Sunny Murray and was involved in his debut album. After appearances with Bill Dixon, he was 1968-1971 at irregular intervals by Sun Ra. From 1971 to 1977 he worked with McCoy Tyner together, next to 1976 he worked with pianist Sonelius Smith at the wildflowers Loft Sessions with, he also played some time with Larry Young, but also with Memphis Slim in Paris. The early 1980s, he recorded with Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society. Most recently, he worked back from Philadelphia, among others, David Eyges and the band Fonksquish and with Khan Jamal. He also worked in Philadelphia as a concert promoter.
