Bytom Synagogue

The Synagogue of Bytom (Polish Synagoga w Bytom ) was located at the former Friedrich -Wilhelm-Ring (or Friedrich- Wilhelm-Platz ) in the Upper Silesian city of Bytom (or Polish Bytom ), which up to the German invasion of Poland in 1939 a German border town near the Second Polish Republic was.

The Beuthener synagogue was built in 1869, where it replaced an older one. The foundation stone was laid on May 25, 1868 the grand opening took place on July 2, 1869, the inauguration on 2 December of the same year. The members of the Jewish community of Bytom were among the first victims of the Holocaust: They were in the first concentration camp transport and were on February 15, 1942 at the " Bunker I " gassed at Auschwitz -Birkenau.

On November 9, 2007 the 69th anniversary of the "Kristallnacht", a memorial plaque was installed at the site, which dates from the artist Stanisław Pietrusę and was funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. The unveiling took place in the presence of the German Consul Louis Neudorf, the Beuthener Mayor Piotr Koj, as well as representatives of the Jewish community.
