Byumba

Byumba is a city in the north of Rwanda. The city is located about 60 kilometers north of the capital, Kigali and has about 66,500 inhabitants.

Since the local government reform from 1 January 2006 Byumba is the capital of the Northern Province and the district Gicumbi. The Northern Province was formed in 2006 from the merger of Ruhengeri, Kigali parts of the province and the province of Byumba Byumba whose capital had been until then.

About 7 kilometers from the city is located, since 1997, an SOS Children's Village.
