C. C. Beck

Charles Clarence Beck ( born June 8, 1910 in Zumbrota, Minnesota, † November 22, 1989 in Gainesville, Florida) was an American comic book artist.

Life

Beck grew up in the U.S. state of Minnesota. He studied art at the Chicago Academy and the University of Minnesota and then started in 1933 to work as a professional artist for the publisher Fawcett Publications, for whom he illustrated first pulp magazines and comic books from 1939.

Beck's best-known work from this period are the drawings for the stories of the superhero Captain Marvel, whose adventures appeared from 1940 onwards in the series Whiz Comics. Beck was the first artist, who implemented the written by Bill Parker stories visually. His work on Captain Marvel allowed Beck, next to also work on series like Spy Smasher and Ibis the Invisible, and in 1941 set up a small sign studio in New York City, where he and his assistants carry out their commitments.

In the following years produced Beck and his team for Fawcett various Captain Marvel spin-offs, such as Captian Marvel Jr. and Mary Marvel and advertising work in comic form for other clients, such as a series of unilateral Comics to "Captain Tootsie ", which for the product " Toostie roll" advertised. 1954 as the demand for the predominantly produced by him superhero comics gradually declined, Beck had his New York studio, as well as a second studio opened in 1944 close.

In 1973, Beck recorded a further ten issues of a new Captain Marvel series, which is now under the title Shazam! changed its name and was issued by the publisher DC Comics.
