C. D. Darlington

Cyril Dean Darlington ( born December 19, 1903 in Chorley ( Lancashire ), † 26 March 1981 Oxford ) was an English botanist and geneticist. He discovered the crossover of chromosomes and recognized its importance for evolution. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " CDDarl. ".

Life and work

1946 Darlington president of the Royal Genetic Society. From 1953 he was a professor at Oxford University and director of the botanical garden.

Darlington authored important writings to Cytology, Genetics and Evolution, in which he examined the significance of the chromosomes for the evolution and the interplay of mutation and selection.

In 1940 he was elected as a member ( "Fellow" ) to the Royal Society, in 1946, the Royal Medal awarded him. In 1951, he became a foreign member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome.
