C. H. D. Buys Ballot

Christoph Heinrich Dietrich Buys- Ballot ( born October 10, 1817 in Kloetinge, community Goes, Zeeland, † February 3, 1890 in Utrecht ) was a Dutch scientist and meteorologist.

Buys- Ballot in 1854 director of the " Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute " ( KNMI ) in Utrecht. As a professor of physics in 1860, he formulated the Malabar Wind Act (Act of Buys- Ballot ), which to this day has great significance for the Seewetterdienst, and proved in an unorthodox manner by postierter on moving trains trumpeter the Doppler effect.

In 1882 was one of Buys- Ballot at the Leopoldina. According to him, the moon crater Buys- Ballot is named. The Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences gives once a decade, the Buys- Ballot Medal for outstanding achievements in the field of meteorology.
