C. L. Franklin

Clarence LaVaughn (CL ) Franklin ( born January 22, 1915 at the Sunflower County, Mississippi, † July 27, 1984 in Detroit, Michigan) was an American Baptist minister and civil rights activist. He is also the father of the " Queen of Soul" Aretha Franklin.

Life

Franklin was born Clarence LaVaughn Walker in Sunflower County, Mississippi, the son of a farmer couple and grew up in Cleveland. His father left the family when Clarence was four years old. After the second husband of his mother, he changed his last name to Franklin. At 16 he was leaving school without qualifications preacher who was employed at various places. First, he became a preacher in the New Salem Baptist Church in Memphis, Tennessee. His sermons, which were both spiritual as well as political issues involved aired on the radio. In 1944 he moved to the Friendship Baptist Church in Buffalo, New York. There his radio show was the first " black " radio program in this area. He then founded the New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan, whose pastor he was.

End of the 1940s and beginning of the 1950s his fame grew throughout the country incessantly. He preached throughout the United States, without giving up his place in Detroit.
