C. W. W. Kannangara

Crest opera William Wijeyekoon Kannangara ( born October 13, 1884 in Randombe, Southern Province; † September 23, 1956 ) was a Sri Lankan lawyer and politician. He was instrumental in the Sri Lankan independence movement and finally from 1937 to 1946, the first Education Minister of Sri Lanka.

He reformed during his tenure, the education system of the country by he set up a free education and so children of all social classes allowed an education. The introduction of the so-called central schools ( Madhya Maha Vidhyala ) also resulted in rural areas to a good education. Due to its performance in the Unanghängigkeitsbewegung and in the field of education, he is considered a national hero and is in Sri Lanka known as the Father of Free Education.

On Parakramabahu Central College in Polgahawela ( NWFP ), a bust was erected in honor Kannangaras.
