C/2013 R1

C/2013 R1 ( Lovejoy ) is a long -period comet.

The Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy discovered the comet on several images that he made on the night of 7 to 8 September 2013. The comet had at this time a brightness of approximately 14 mag. The apparent brightness of C/2013 R1 got to the end of September to 10.5 mag and reached a month later, a value of about 7 mag. At the beginning of November 2013, the comet was first observed with the naked eye.

C/2013 R1 ( Lovejoy ) passed by the Earth on November 19, 2013 at a distance of 61.4 million km. It is expected that the comet in late November 2013, probably like 4 reaches its maximum brightness. Then goes through C/2013 R1 perihelion on 22 December 2013.
