Cabaret is the name of a Broadway musical from 1966. Wrote the music John Kander, the lyrics Fred Ebb, the book Joe Masteroff after the play I Am a Camera ( 1951) by John van Druten, which is based on the autobiographical novels Mr. Norris rises (1935 ) and Farewell Berlin ( 1939) by Christopher Isherwood based. The musical was first performed in the City Broadhurst Theatre in New York on 20 November 1966. Harold Prince produced the staging and led the Director; in the role of Master of Ceremonies was Joel Grey, Miss Lotte Lenya Schneider to be seen as.

Action

Cliff Bradshaw, a young American writer who travels to Berlin to write a novel there. Through his friendship with Ernst Ludwig he comes under the pension of the elderly Miss Schneider. The songs " Maybe this time ", " My Lord " and " Money, Money ", however, were not composed for the musical, but only for the film version in 1972. Due to the great fame of the songs they are mostly inserted at Neuaufführungen.

Cabaret ran in New York from 1966 to 1969 and won the 1967 Tony Award for Best Musical, the best composers and songwriters, the Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical, the best set design, best costume design, best choreography and best Director of a Musical. It was 1987 and 1998 listed again.

Filming

The piece was very successful in 1972 filmed with an altered plot and additional songs by Kander and Ebb. It was directed by Bob Fosse, Liza Minnelli played the role of Sally Bowles. The film won eight Oscars.
