Scorpaenichthys marmoratus

Scorpaenichthys marmoratus is a species of fish from the family of sculpins ( Cottidae ). She comes close to the coast in front in the northeastern Pacific from Sitka on the coast of southeastern Alaska to Punta Abrejos on Mexico's Baja California and lives from the intertidal zone to depths of about 70 meters.

Features

Scorpaenichthys marmoratus is almost a meter long, making it the largest Groppenart. It reaches a weight of 14 kg. The fish are completely scaleless. The head looks beefy. Above the eye is in each case a branched tufts skin. The upper sting of Vorkiemendeckels is rounded or slightly bent. Above the upper lip there is a distinct fold of skin. Scorpaenichthys marmoratus is brown, yellowish, greenish or reddish, whitish on the ventral side to the dorsal side. The caudal fin is slightly rounded.

Way of life

Scorpaenichthys marmoratus lives in rocky habitats in kelp beds and on sandy and muddy seabeds. It feeds on crustaceans, fish and molluscs. For reproduction, the fish gather in larger groups.

Use

Scorpaenichthys marmoratus one of the few bullheads that have economic significance. The meat is considered good, but is often greenish blue. The color disappears when cooking. The roe of Scorpaenichthys marmoratus contains Dinogunellin and is therefore toxic.
