Cabo de la Vela

The Cabo de la Vela is a cape on the northwest coast of the Guajira Peninsula in Colombia and in the absolute north of South America. In the West extends the Gulf of Darién, to the north and east of the Caribbean Sea. The cape was discovered in the early 16th century by Alonso de Ojeda and Juan de la Cosa. Nicholas Federmann founded in 1535 the first village of Europeans in the vicinity of the cape with the name Nuestra Señora Santa María de los Remedios del Cabo de la Vela. The desert region around the Cabo de la Vela is inhabited by the indigenous people of the Wayúu.

The Cabo de la Vela is a popular ecotourism destination of Colombia.
