Cabrillo National Monument

The Cabrillo National Monument was built in honor of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, the first European who landed on the west coast of North America on September 28, 1542. The monument was dedicated one day after his status as a National Monument and was added on 15 October 1966 at the National Register of Historic Places.

1939 finished the sculptor Alvaro de Bree on a statue Cabrillo by the Portuguese government, which donated the statue to the United States. The statue is about four feet tall and weighs about seven tons.

Each year in October, the Cabrillo Festival takes place, which repeats the landing at Ballast Point in the Bay of San Diego.

From the park, the harbor and the skyline of San Diego and Coronado is seen.

On the highest point of the park a symbol of San Diego stands the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, since 1854. From the lighthouse can be observed in winter gray whales.
