Cacheu

Cacheu is a town in Guinea- Bissau and the regional capital Cacheu in the northwest of the country.

Cacheu is located on the south bank of the Rio Cacheu about 20 kilometers from its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean and has 9882 inhabitants ( 2009). The place was in 1588 the first Portuguese trading post in Guinea- Bissau and served mainly the slave trade. To this end, the Companhia de Cacheu was created in 1675. Cacheu was dependent on Cape Verde, Guinea- Bissau and was created in 1879 as an independent Portuguese colony.

There is a progression from the colonial period, a market, a ferry across the river and a nature park Tarafes de Cacheu in the mangroves.

Since 1988, a partnership with Viana do Castelo in Portugal.
