1,5-diaminopentane is a diamine, the lysine is produced as a result of microbial degradation of proteins from the amino acid by decarboxylation. Therefore, it is called a biogenic amine. If anti-fouling Base is part of the ptomaines (also called ptomaine ) and also contributes to the odor of decay. It comes in addition diaminobutane ( putrescine ) also present in the seminal fluid, where it serves non-specific defense mechanisms.

The diamine was first isolated in 1885 by Ludwig Brieger.
