Cadence Records

Cadence Records was an American record company based in New York. It was founded in 1952 by Archie Bleyer, who was previously the musical director and band leader for Arthur Godfrey's talent shows.

First recording artist at Cadence was Godfrey's protégé Julius La Rosa. His very first single, " Anywhere I Wander ", which was also the first Cadence release, came in the top 30, the third La Rosa single " Eh, Cumpari " (1953) became a number one hit in the charts the Cash Box magazine and number two on the Billboard charts.

Other artists who appeared in Godfrey's shows, to Bleyers record label joined, including the Chordettes. Cadence also produced the early hits of Andy Williams, the Everly Brothers and the first title of Kirby Stone Four. Johnny Tillotson was also one of the stars of the record company. Also pianist Donald Shirley was in the 1950s and 1960s at Cadence under contract. Short term: the record company also had a special label for jazz productions called Candid Records.

Cadence produced in the 1950s and 1960s many hit records, including the U.S. bestseller "The First Family", a parody of the comedian and impersonator Vaughn Meader on the family of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Within two months of its release in October 1962, the album sold a million copies, a record at that time; until the end of the following year 7.5 million copies had gone over the counters.

Andy Williams and the Everly Brothers left the label in the early 1960. This and the changes in the music business, which had been triggered by the British Invasion, led to 1964 the decline of Cadence Records. Bleyer closed his record company. Andy Williams bought him from the master tapes to prevent especially to that Cadence would be released old material in competition with new recordings for Columbia Records. He founded Barnaby Records to manage the Cadence catalog, his own material he had, however, to publish Columbia again.
