Cadmium cyanide is a chemical compound of cadmium from the group of cyanides.
Production and representation
Cadmium cyanide can be obtained by solution of cadmium hydroxide in aqueous hydrogen cyanide and subsequent evaporation.
It can be precipitated from an aqueous solution also a cadmium salt (eg cadmium sulfate) with an alkali metal cyanide (eg potassium cyanide ).
Properties
Cadmium cyanide is a non-flammable, moisture sensitive white powder which, when heated turns brown and decomposes at temperatures above 200 ° C, hydrogen cyanide is released. In water it slowly decomposes. Cadmium cyanide has a cubic crystal structure of the copper ( I) oxide - type (a = 6.32 Å). It is slightly soluble in water but soluble whereby K2Cd (CN) 4 forms in potassium cyanide.
Use
Cadmium cyanide is for plating ( ie as corrosion protection) uses of metals.
