Caernarfon

Caernarfon ( Caernarvon earlier notation, ie: kairnarvon ) is a small town in north-west Wales. It lies on the Menai Straits, opposite the island of Anglesey and is the unofficial capital of North Wales. The place is on a Roman fort of the 1st century AD. back.

Name

The name means " castle ( caer ) in Arfon ", Arfon (ar FON ) itself means " opposite Môn ( Anglesey ) ". The conversion of " m" in an "f" after certain prepositions (ar here "to" ) is one of the peculiarities of the Welsh language ( Anlautmutationen ).

Culture

The inhabitants of the village speak Welsh to a large extent, the second official language. In addition, Caernarfon is a center of Welsh culture. The traditional Eisteddfod, a festival of literature, poetry and music, took place here since 1862 repeatedly instead. From Caenarfon the football team comes Caernarfon Town.
