Cesium is a chemical compound selected from the group of the nitrates.

Production and representation

Cesium can be obtained by the reaction of cesium carbonate with nitric acid.

Properties

Like other alkali metal nitrates of cesium nitrate decomposes when heated and forms Caesiumnitrit:

Caesium forms except cesium also two unusual nitrates, their structure as CsNO3 · HNO3 and CsNO3 · 2HNO3 (melting temperature 100 ° C and 36-38 ° C) can be described.

Cesium forms a cubic or hexagonal crystal structure.

Use

Cesium is widely used in military pyrotechnics, in NIR flares and Infrarottarnnebeln. While the use in NIR flares due to the intense emission lines of the element at 852, 1359 and 1469 nm, the use is based in Tarnnebeln on the light of ionization of the element. The formed in the flame during combustion of the pyrotechnic active mass cesium ions act as condensation nuclei and thus reinforce the important for the absorption of radiation aerosol yield.

It is also used for the preparation of Caesiumnitratocuprat.
