Cafayate Department

The department Cafayate is located in the south of the province of Salta in northwestern Argentina and is one of 23 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered on the north by the departments of San Carlos and La Viña, on the east by the department of Guachipas and the east and south by the provinces of Tucumán and Catamarca.

The capital of the department is the same Cafayate.

Cities and Towns

Only municipality of the department of Cafayate Cafayate is the same, which is classified as community second category. Other settlements are Tolombon and Yacochuya.

Geography

In the department of Cafayate, the rivers Río Calchaquí and Río Santa María unite to the Río de las Conchas, which flows north and empties into the Embalse de Cabra Corral.

Tourism

The department Cafayate is known as a wine growing region whose specialty is the development of Torrontés Riojano grape. The bodegas in Cafayate are a preferred destination for tourists. See also the article viticulture in Argentina.
