Caffè sospeso

The Caffè sospeso (Eng. floating coffee or postponed coffee) is a local specialty of Neapolitan culture. Since the turn of the century to the 20th century established itself in many bars in the city the custom to pay another coffee except the own coffee. This coffee is noted by the barista and served on demand to a needy.

Locals carry on the tradition to the fact that the Neapolitans have often been asked in the history of themselves. In this environment, structures of self-government developed (see also Camorra ), to compensate for the lack of political leadership.

Current Situation

In Naples, the tradition lives on today. However, it is usually only found in the Old Town and met only limited a social function. Especially around Christmas time it is practiced lively.

The euro and financial crisis meant that from 2008 initiatives developed in other European countries to adopt this tradition also in other cities. In Bulgaria 150 cafes were won over. In Spain, this action spread under the name "Café pendiente ". Many other European countries followed suit. Meanwhile Cafes in North and South America and Australia offer coffee gifts. On the Internet, various sites that list these cafes emerged.

In Germany there since 2013, the Project Suspended Coffees Germany. Use of a website and a Facebook page to cafes are obtained for the concept. The organizers are trying to extend the offer to other drinks and food.
