Cagayan River

The Cagayan rises in the Philippine mountains of the Caraballo Mountains, on the island of Luzon.

Its main tributaries are the Magat, Rio Chico, Ilagan and Siffu - Mallig. These arise from the mountain ranges of the Sierra Madre and the Cordillera Central in the northern part of the main island of Luzon. The Rio Chico is 210 kilometers, the longest tributary of the Cagayan and its source at Mount Data. At its second largest tributary, the Magat, the Magat Dam hydroelectric power plant was built with a capacity of 360 megawatts.

The river flows in a northerly direction, it happens Ilagan and Tuguegarao and ends at Aparri in the Luzon Strait. Overall, the river forms a 190 km long and up to 60 km wide valley, the Cagayan Valley. The Cagayan, with a length of 505 km the longest river in the Philippines. Another river with the name Cagayan is located in the southern Philippines on the island of Mindanao. This originates in the province of Bukidnon and flows in Cagayan de Oro in the Mindanaosee.

The excavations at the archaeological sites in Cagayan Valley were able to prove the early presence of man on the riverbank of the Cagayan. The finds are among the oldest human artifacts on the territory of the Philippines and are since 2006 on the suggestion list of the Philippines for inclusion in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
