Cagnes-sur-Mer

Cagnes -sur -Mer [ kaɲ syʁ mɛ ː ʁ ] is a city in southeastern France in the Alpes - Maritimes ( 06) of the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur region with 46 632 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). Cagnes -sur- Mer is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, east of Cannes and to the west of Nice (Nice). With the Bavarian city of Passau Cagnes is twinned since 1973.

Geography

Cagnes -sur -Mer consists of the city center, the two areas " Le Haut de Cagnes " and " Le Cros de Cagnes " as well as from other suburban districts. The neighborhoods are grown together and form a single agglomeration.

Le Haut de Cagnes

Le Haut de Cagnes is on a hill above the city center. Atop the hill is the Grimaldi Castle and a Palace Square with views of the Maritime Alps. The Ortstbild is characterized by narrow, winding streets. In Le Haut de Cagnes, there are several restaurants. A free minibus ( Navette ) oscillates constantly between Le Haut de Cagnes and the Central Bus Station in the city center.

Le Cros de Cagnes

Le Cros de Cagnes is located on the beach district of Cagnes. The district is inundated with tourists, and has a small fishing harbor. The waterfront has been redesigned in recent years. Le Cros de Cagnes is separated by the railway line Nice -Cannes as well as the highway from the inland town center.

To the east of the municipality of Loup flows into the Mediterranean. Right through the city flows the Cagne that gave the city its name, and has been built over in the center part; it also flows into the Mediterranean.

Cantons

Cagnes -sur -Mer is the capital of three cantons:

  • The Canton of Cagnes- sur-Mer Centre consists of a part of the city of Cagnes- sur -Mer
  • To Canton Cagnes -sur -Mer -Ouest include not only the western part of the city's communities Villeneuve- Loubet, La Colle- sur -Loup and Saint -Paul -de- Vence.
  • Canton of Saint -Laurent -du -Var -Cagnes -sur -Mer Est - managed except the eastern part of the city, the neighboring village of Saint -Laurent -du -Var.

Traffic

Cagnes -sur -Mer is located about 6 kilometers from Nice International Airport. The A8 motorway Aix -en- Provence - Menton (La Provençale ) leads to the exit number 48 directly through the city. There is a railway station on the route Marseille- Nice. Medium term, the extension of the tram Nice to Cagnes -sur -Mer is planned. Personalities

Pierre- Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), French impressionist painter, lived from 1903-1919 in Cagnes -sur -Mer and died there as well. He is buried his wife and two sons, Pierre Renoir and Jean Renoir Essoyes.

Besides Renoir numerous other artists have in Cagnes -sur -Mer lived or temporarily stopped: Raoul Dufy, Victor Vasarely, Moïse Kisling, Yves Brayer, Georges Simenon, Marcel Mouloudji, Amedeo Modigliani, Tsuguharu Foujita, Yves Klein and his parents Fred Klein and Marie Raymond, Ingmar Bergman, Brigitte Bardot, Suzy Solidor, Chaim Soutine, Georges Ulmer, Félix Ziem and others. Until the 1960s because of Le Haut de Cagnes was also called the " Montmartre of the Côte d' Azur ".
