Cailleach

Cailleach [ kal ʲ əx, pl. Kal ʲ əxə ], also Calliagh, caillech, Cally, Scottish Gaelic pl. Cailleachan [ kaʎəxən ] referred to in Celtic mythology, a group of Gaelic legendary figures from Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man. The Cailleachs are witches like giantesses and are usually associated with the weather.

Importance

Most Cailleachan considered the embodiment of winter, others are internal cause of storms, protectors of the animals or creators of certain lakes, rivers, mountains or islands. On the Cailleach - shapes trains older Celtic locally and Earth Goddesses were transferred. Related figures are the Black Annis or Gentle Annie, Gwrach y Rhibyn, Banshee, Bronach and time.

Etymology

The name Cailleach means " nun ", " The Veiled ", " witch " or " old woman " and is derived from the Latin word pallium ( " veil " or ecclesiastical robe that is worn by women ) from. In Old Irish, the noun ( " the Veiled " ) is caillech to caille ( " veil "). Differentiated terms in today's Gaelic are cailleach Dhubh ( nun ), cailleach Oidhche ( "Owl" - literally " Night Woman " ) and cailleach Feasa ( soothsayer ) and cailleach phiseogach ( " witch "). With cailleach the modern Scottish Gaelic lexemes are caileag ( " young woman ", " girl " ) and Scots carline / carlin ( ' old woman ', ' witch ' ) is used.
