Caïssa

Caissa is the ( anachronistic ) goddess of chess. She is a recent invention in truth was the chess game is not yet known to the pre-Christian Europe.

The name comes from a poem of the same name by William Jones, which was published in 1763. This Caissa is a nymph in the god Mars falls in love. When his love is not returned, he invented the game of chess to win her heart. Jones was inspired to write his poem of the first 1525 printed work of Marcus Hieronymus Vida Scacchia ludus, where the nymph named Scacchis.

Caissa is included in the names of many chess clubs. Also in the chess literature, the term is more common as a metaphor before, for example in phrases such as he was a favorite Caissas ( a strong player ) or Caissa hit him with blindness ( he has committed a blunder ).

The Soviet chess program, which in 1974 won the first World Computer Chess Championship, was kaissa.
