Calafat

Calafat is a city in Dolj county, Romania, located on the border river Danube, opposite the Bulgarian city of Vidin. Here, the second Danube bridge was built between the two countries until 2012.

The city was founded in the 14th century by colonists from Genoa that there a large number of workers employed for repairing ships, the " Calfats " (of caulking ) called themselves. This industry gave the city its name. Also many companies from the textile industry were active here. In 1854 the Russian by the Turkish army was defeated under Ahmet Pasha, who managed a surprise attack on the camp of the Russians here.

Population

In 1900, the population was 7,113, in 2000 it was 21,227. According to a census in 2002 there lived 18 858 inhabitants. Of these, there were 18,030 Romanians, 777 Roma, 25 Greeks, Ukrainians 7, 5 Hungary, 4 Italian, 2 German, 2 Croats, each a Bulgarian, Czech, Turkish and three others.

Traffic

From the Romanian Calafat there is a ferry to the Bulgarian Vidin. For access to the ferry port management requires an input duty of EUR 7, - for passenger cars. The car ferry ticket costs EUR 25, - (anno 2011)

From 2012 also the Danube Bridge 2 will go into operation on the built strong at the moment.
