Calamine

Calamine (English, read: kælə ˌ maɪn ) is colored with a small amount of iron (III ) oxide, zinc oxide powder. The mixture is used in cosmetics as well as medicinally in preparations for the skin.

Zinc oxide has an astringent ( astringent ), drying and mildly antiseptic. Cosmetically, the covering effect is also significant. The coloration with iron (III ) oxide is used for skin-colored tint. " Calamine Lotion" is comparable with the Zinkoxidschüttelmixtur lotion and was classified as an essential drug for the treatment of itching by the World Health Organization ( WHO).

Calamine USP contains as specified in the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP ) at least 98.0 % of zinc oxide (ZnO ). The USP also describes a recipe for a Calamine lotion containing ( Calamine Lotion USP). The British Pharmacopoeia ( BP) listed Calamine BP, however, is (2 ZnCO3 · 3 Zn ( OH) 2 ) is defined as colored with iron ( III ) oxide, basic zinc carbonate. Basic zinc carbonate has similar performance characteristics such as zinc oxide. BP Calamine further describes various formulations ( cream, ointment, lotion ) is applied on the skin.
