Calas (general)

Kalas or Kallas (Greek Κάλας or Κάλλας; † later than 327 BC ), son of Harpalus was a Macedonian commander Alexander the Great. He was probably related to the treasurer Harpalus.

In the year 336 BC led Kalas along with Parmenion and Attalus first contingents of troops across the Hellespont to Asia. He conquered the interior of the Troad, but was pushed back after a counter-offensive Memnon to the Hellespont. Here he held a bridgehead on the BC Alexander and his army entered the Asian soil in spring 334 and thus began the campaign against Persia. In the battle of the Granicus Kalas commanded the Thessalian cavalry. Thereafter, he was appointed governor of the province Kleinphrygien. He was thus not only the first Macedonian governor of Asia in general, but it also the Persian Satrapentitel was awarded, which Alexander underlined his claim to the legitimate right of succession as a Persian Great King. The ancient Persian administrative structures were retained. Kalas was incumbent in his office also securing the strategically important Hellespont, which is why his province is often referred to as bright Pontic Phrygia.

In the year 333 BC Kalas subjugated the Paphlagonians, previously still voluntary Alexander subjugated, then but allied with the Persians had. In an attempt to conquer Bithynia, Kalas fell in battle against the dynasts Bas. He was replaced by Demarchos in office.
