Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana

The Calcasieu Parish (French: Paroisse de Calcasieu ) is a parish located in the U.S. state of Louisiana. In 2010, the Parish had 192 768 inhabitants and a population density of 69.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Lake Charles, named after Charles Sallier, an early settler in the area.

Geography

The Parish is located in southwestern Louisiana, above the mouth of the Calcasieu River in the Gulf of Mexico. To the west the county is bordered by the Sabine River, which forms the frontier to Texas.

History

The Calcasieu Parish was formed in 1840 from parts of St. Landry Parish. It was named after the Calcasieu River.
