Calcinaia

Calcinaia is a municipality in the Province of Pisa in the Italian region of Tuscany with 11,838 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Geography

The main town of the municipality of Calcinaia lies about 25 km east of Pisa and about 50 km west of Florence, on the right bank of the Arno, in the plain south-east of the Monte Pisano in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, GR 1864 / G. The municipal area also include the five kilometers south west district of Oltrarno and Fornacette, Sardina and Montecchio.

Calcinaia bordered to the north by Bien Tina, on the east by Santa Maria a Monte, in the south of Pontedera and to the west by Cascina and Vicopisano.

History

In Roman times it was known as Vicus Vitri. In medieval times it is attested by this name from 975, while the first testified in 1193 Calcinaia name goes back to numerous lime kilns built in the area ( Italian: calce ).

In the High Middle Ages, the Calcinaia first belonged to the rule of the Counts of Cadolingi Fucecchio and then to the Ghibelline family Upezzinghi from Pisa. The most prominent representative of the family was Gualtieri di Calcinaia, which was in 1221 Podestà of San Gimignano and Arezzo in 1243.

Calcinaia was the scene of rivalries between the republics of Pisa and Lucca, and in the 15th century under the rule of Florence. From 1555 on, was Grand Duke Cosimo I de ' Medici, including perform according to plans by Leonardo da Vinci, large-scale water regulation works to combat the sometimes severe flooding of the Arno. Here, the river bed of the Arno was transferred to the south, so that Calcinaia, originally lay on the left bank of the Arno, is now the right. After draining the measures developed to Calcinaia agriculture ( cereals, vegetables, hemp and linen). From the 1960s many industrial and service companies settled mainly in the district Fornacette.

Culture and sights

  • Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista - The church was mentioned in 1193 for the first time. The present building dates from the 18th century, and was restored after heavy damage in World War II. In the church is the grave of the holy Ubaldesca.
  • Chiesa di Sant'Andrea in Pozzale - Church in the district Fornacette in the classical style.
  • Torre degli Upezzinghi - The tower is remaining part of medieval fortifications.

Regular events

  • Regatta - Historical Regatta on the River Arno on June 4. Occur at the parade accompanied by a costumed race three municipalities ( rioni ) against each other: Montecchio in the north, traditionally represented the bourgeoisie; Oltrarno south of the Arno, which represents the simple country folk, and Nave. The regatta is the highlight of the celebrations in honor of patron saints Ubaldesca.
  • Sagra della Nozza, Village Festival in May, on which one is a traditional sweet dish of the place, Nozza offered.
