Caleb Rodney

Caleb Rodney ( born April 29, 1767 in Lewes, Delaware, † April 29, 1840 ) was an American politician and 1822-1823 Governor of the State of Delaware.

Early years and political rise

Caleb Rodney was the brother of Daniel Rodney, who was Governor of Delaware 1814-1817, and the uncle of George B. Rodney, who was from 1841 to 1845 deputy in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was also distantly related to Caesar Rodney, who was 1778-1781 President of Delaware. He was also related to U.S. Senator Caesar A. Rodney. Prior to his political career, he operated a shop in his home town of Lewes.

Politically, he was like his brother, a member of the Federalist Party. He joined the Sussex County a society for the abolition of slavery. In 1816 he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Representatives in Washington. Between 1806 and 1822 he was with some interruptions alternately in the House of Representatives from Delaware and in the State Senate. In 1822, he was its president.

Governor of Delaware and other CV

In 1819, Henry Molleston had been elected as the new governor of Delaware. He died before he was scheduled for January 1820 inauguration. It was then decided that the then Senatspräsidident Jacob Stout should complete the first year of Mollestons three-year term as governor. Then, new elections should decide who should rule as governor the remaining two years. These elections won John Collins, who passed away but already in April 1822 before the end of the term in January 1823. After Collins 's death had to Rodney, who was President of the Senate at that time, terminate the term of office. He was thus the third governor in the original term of office Mollestons.

In the nine months of his term Caleb Rodney sat essentially continued the policies of his predecessor, without putting their own accents. After the end of his term on January 21, 1823 Rodney retired from politics and returned to his private affairs. He died in April 1840., With his wife Elizabeth West, he had five children.
