Calenzana

Calenzana is a municipality with 2288 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ), in Haute -Corse and capital of the canton of the same.

Location

Calenzana is located about 12 kilometers southeast of Calvi to 275 meters on the edge of the coastal plain on the slopes of Monte Grosso with 1937 m. Nearby is the Aéroport Calvi - Sainte-Catherine Airport. In over 180 km ² large municipality of Calenzana the community Moncale is an enclave.

Attractions

The former collegiate church of Saint -Blaise was built according to plans by the Milanese architect Domenico Baina 1691-1701 with a bell tower in the late Baroque style. Inside it shows a ceiling fresco with St. Blaise. In the choir is a Baroque altar from 1767 with a marble balustrade. The side chapels on both sides of the choir are überkuppelt and act inflated by the trompe- l'oeil painting. 2007 there was a major renovation.

On the same square, opposite the Chapel of St. Croix is located. The chapel with the original choir stalls serving the brotherhoods of St. Antoine and St. Restitude. Restituta of Africa in 1984, appointed by Pope John Paul II, patron saint of Calenzana and Balagne.

Others

Calenzana is known as the northern edge of the mountain trail GR 20 At the exit to Calvi with a Gîte rural campground and information of the Regional Natural Park of Corsica ( frz: Parc naturel régional de Corse) is operated for the hikers.
