Caleta Tortel

Tortel is the southernmost municipality in the Región de Aysen (Region XI). A total of around 500 inhabitants.
Geography
Caleta Tortel is located 462 km south-west of Coyhaique. The climate is due to the southern location already quite polar, winter temperatures drop to -20 ° C.
History
1899 explored the German geographer Hans Steffen Western Patagonia. The Italian Catholic Father Antonio Ronchi built in the area over 30 years, many small churches.
Economy
The community lives mainly from traffic, the Carretera Austral, which must take the small ferry across the Río Bravo and Mitchell Fjord. Fishing and tourism play a smaller role.
Tourism
The Rio Baker and Rio Bravo are popular fishing areas. In the northwest of Laguna San Rafael National Park, with its glaciers. There is also the port of Caleta Tortel who owns a small airport. To the south lies the enormous National Park Bernardo O'Higgins.
