Caleuche

The Caleuche is a mythical ghost ship in local folklore and mythology of the Chiloé Chiloé island in Chile. It is one of the most important myths of the culture of Chiloé.

Myth

The Caleuche appears as a beautiful, bright sailing ship with the sounds of a celebration on board, so passing ships are lured. As the Flying Dutchman is able to escape when needed access by sailing against the wind or descending below the water surface.

It is controlled by singing and dancing Brujos, a pivotal figure in the mythology of the Chiloé, which have as a sorcerer on black magic powers and are eager to overthrow righteous chilotes to destruction. The crew of the ship consists of both resurrected drowned and partly from enslaved fishermen and sailors who were captured by the Brujos.
