Calgary Centennials

The Calgary Centennials were a Canadian ice hockey team from Calgary, Alberta. The team played from 1966 to 1977 in one of the three highest Canadian Junior Hockey League, the Western Hockey League ( WHL).

History

The Calgary Centennials were established in 1966 under the name Calgary Buffaloes as a franchise of the Western Hockey League. After one year, the renaming followed in Centennial. Her biggest success was achieved with the team reaching the finals at the Ed Chynoweth Cup in the 1973/74 season, in which they were subject, however, the Regina Pats in the best- of-seven series with a sweep. In the eleven years of its existence, the team from Alberta could reach the playoffs seven times, with one advancing in addition to the final defeat in 1974 four more times to the semifinals. In addition, Calgary 1970, 1972 and 1974 respectively winners of the West Division.

Following the 1976/77 season the franchise to Billings, Montana, was relocated, where it subsequently participated under the name Billings Bighorns on game operation of the WHL.
