History

Calheta is one of the oldest settlements ( povoações ) of São Jorge; they grew quickly after its founding in 1493, because it facilitated with its port to connect to the nearest island of Terceira in the northeast considerably.

On June 3, 1534 Calheta was by King João III. raised to an Vila.

Throughout history, the town was repeatedly attacked by pirates and corsairs and devastated, as for example in the year 1597th

A particularly strong earthquake occurred called on 9 July 1757 Mandado de Deus. On October 4, 1945, a massive tsunami taught at destruction.

Calheta is the seat of Municipalities of 126.3 km ² with a population of 3617 (as of June 30, 2011 ), which is divided into five Freguesias. These are:
