Calhoun County (Illinois)

The Calhoun Countyist a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 5089 inhabitants and a population density of 7.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Hardin.

Parts of Calhoun County are part of the Metro - East called the eastern part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area around the city of St. Louis in neighboring Missouri.

Geography

The County is located on the western edge of Illinois and has an area of 735 square kilometers, of which 77 square kilometers are water surface. The western border of the county is also the border with Missouri and is formed by the Mississippi River. In the east, the County is bounded by the Illinois River. Since both rivers meet in the south the Calhoun County is actually a peninsula. At the Calhoun County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Calhoun County was formed on January 10, 1825 from a part of Pike County. It was named after John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), the Secretary of War under President James Monroe (1817-1825), seventh Vice President of the United States under Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson (1825-1832) and Secretary of State under Presidents John Tyler and James K. Polk ( 1844-1845 ).

From 1825 to 1847, Gilead was the seat of county government, then briefly Hamburg and in the same year Hardin.

Demographic data

According to the census in 2010 lived in Calhoun County 5,089 people in 2,043 households. The population density was 7.7 people per square kilometer. In the 2,043 households lived statistically 2.48 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 98.9 percent white, 0.1 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 0.8 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

21.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 59.5 percent were between 18 and 64 and 19.5 percent were 65 years or older. 49.6 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 44,930. The per capita income was $ 21,849. 11.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
