Calhoun County (Mississippi)

The Calhoun County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Pittsboro. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in north-central Mississippi and has an area of 1523 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface.

History

The Calhoun County was formed on March 8, 1852 from parts of Lafayette County and Yalobusha County. It was named after John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), a former Minister of War (1817-1825), Vice President (1825-1832) and Secretary of State ( 1844-1845 ).
