Calhoun County (South Carolina)
Calhoun County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat), Saint Matthews.
Geography
The County is located near the geographical center of South Carolina and has an area of 1016 square kilometers, of which 31 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Richland County, Sumter County, Clarendon County, Orangeburg County and Lexington County.
History
Calhoun County was formed in 1908. It was named for John C. Calhoun, 7th Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832 under Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and long-time U.S. Senator.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Calhoun County 15,185 people in 5,917 households and 4,272 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 50.03 percent White, 48.69 percent Black or African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.24 percent from other races groups; 0.69 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.40 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,917 households, 30.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.0 percent were married couples living together, 15.8 percent were single mothers, 27.8 percent were non-families, 24.5 percent of all households and 9.6 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.03 persons.
25.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 7.4 percent between 18 to 24, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44, 26.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 90.1 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.4 males.
The median income for a household was $ 32,736, and the median income for a family was $ 39,823. Males have a median income of $ 31,431, women $ 22,267. The per capita income was $ 17,446. 13.2 percent of families and 16.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
