Calhoun County (West Virginia)

Calhoun County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Grantsville.

Geography

The County is located just north-west of the geographic center of West Virginia and has an area of 727 square kilometers without significant water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Ritchie County, Gilmer County, Braxton County, Clay County, Roane County and Wirt County.

History

Calhoun County was formed on March 5, 1856 from parts of Gilmer County. It was named for John C. Calhoun, seventh Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832 under Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and long-time U.S. Senator.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Calhoun County 7,582 people in 3,071 households and 2,201 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer.
