California Institute of Technology

The California Institute of Technology ( Technical University of California '), better known as Caltech is a private research university located in Pasadena in Los Angeles County, which specializes in natural and engineering sciences.

Description

The research university was founded in 1891 with only 31 students. To date, the number of students is about 2000 compared to the great rival MIT with similar research profile very low, with a high proportion of students is in a postgraduate study. The university is a member of the Association of American Universities, an existing association of leading research-intensive since 1900, North American universities.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA, which monitors the operation of space probes, is part of the University. The institute is connected to the Research Network BIRN. The current President of the University is Jean -Lou Chameau.

With 310 professors and 2171 students (2004/ 2005) is the scientifically highly productive university extremely small, nevertheless it belongs according to various rankings of the top ten universities in the world. In The Times Higher Education Supplement (2011/2012) it was rated in general and for the sciences, engineering and physics even as the world's best university. In the history of the university staff and alumni have won a total of 31 Nobel Prizes, including 13 in Physics, 9 in Physiology or Medicine, 6 in chemistry, as well as two in economics and a Nobel Peace Prize.

The Caltech began in 1891 under the name of Throop College ( after the founder Amos G. Throop ( 1811-1894 ) ) and received its present name in 1921 and the rank of a university. Among the defining scientists at the early stages in the 1920s belonged to George Ellery Hale, Arthur Amos Noyes, and Robert Andrews Millikan.

Sports

The sports teams of Caltech are the Beaver. The university is a member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
