California State Senate

The Senate of California (California State Senate ) is the upper house of the California State Legislature, the legislature of the U.S. state of California.

The chamber of parliament is composed of 40 Senators representing an electoral district respectively. Deputies are elected for four -year terms. Each of these specified election districts comprising an average rate of 846 791 inhabitants, which is significantly more than the estimated 639 088 residents in a California congressional district. The terms of office of the Senators are staggered so that always half every two years will be elected. The senators from the odd electoral districts are in the years that are divisible by four, chosen, whereas the Senators are elected from the even-numbered election districts in the intervening even-numbered years. The term of office of the Senators shall be limited to two terms.

The meeting room of the Senate is located together with the State Assembly in the California State Capitol in Sacramento capital.

Tasks of the Senate

The Senate of California fall As in upper houses in other states and territories, as well as in the U.S. Senate compared to the House of Representatives special tasks that go beyond the law. So it is up to the Senate, nominations of the Governor in his cabinet to accept or reject other offices of the executive branch and commissions and authorities.

Structure of the chamber

President of the Senate is the acting vice governor, respectively. At votes he only participates to bring about a decision in stalemates. In the absence of the Vice- Governor of the respective President pro tempore stands in front of the plenary sessions. This is elected by the majority party of the Senate and later confirmed by the chamber. Current Lieutenant Governor and President of the Senate is Democrat Gavin Newsom, president pro tempore of the Democrat Darrell Steinberg from the 6th district.

For the majority leader ( Majority leader) of the Democrats was Ellen Corbett, 24th electoral district, elected; Leader of the opposition (minority leader) is the Republican Robert Dutton from the 31 constituency.
