Calle Johansson

Carl Christian " Calle " Johansson ( born February 14, 1967 in Gothenburg ) is a retired Swedish professional ice hockey player and current coach, who in his active years from 1983 to 2004 among others for the Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League has played. Since July 2012, he is an assistant coach for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League.

Career

Calle Johansson began his career as a hockey player in his home town in Västra Frölunda, for the first team he 1983/84 his debut in the Elitserien was in the season, where he scored four goals in 28 games and had four assists. After he was staying with his team in the then Division 1 second-class, missed the defender with Frölunda its chances of promotion and joined in 1985 the first division side IF Björklöven to, with whom he was Swedish Champion in the 1986/87 season. In the summer of 1987, the Buffalo Sabres beorderten who had selected him in the NHL Entry Draft in 1985 in the first round than a total of 14 players, the left-handed shooters to North America.

In his rookie year in the National Hockey League Johansson scored in the 1987/88 season in a total of 77 games 43 scorer points, including four goals for Buffalo. During the following season he was released on 7 March 1989 together with a second-round vote in exchange for Clint Malarchuk, Grant Ledyard and a sixth- round election law at the Washington Capitals, for he stood in the following 14 years on the ice. Only during the lockout at the start of season 1994/95 completed the Swede five games for the EHC Kloten in the Swiss National League A, for which he recorded a goal and two assists. After the World Champion had officially proclaimed in 1991 and 1992 in August 2003, his career ended, he signed on 9 March 2004 once a contract as a free agent with the Toronto Maple Leafs, for which he gave six assists to season end in a total of twelve games, before he finally stopped at the age of 37 years with ice hockey. He was only the fifth Europeans, who played more than 1000 games in the NHL.

After the Swede assistant coach at Västra Frölunda had briefly been in the Elitserien already in the 2006/07 season, he was hired by the Washington Capitals in the same position in July 2012.

Internationally

For Sweden, Johansson took part in the U20 World Junior Championships in 1986 and 1987, as well as the World Championships in 1991 and 1992 in part. In addition, he was in the squad of Sweden at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and the World Cup of Hockey 1996.
